Kamisaka Sekka

Kamisaka Sekka  (1866 - 1942)

神坂雪佳

Kamisaka Sekka was born into a samurai family in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period.

At the age of 16, he studied the Shijo school of painting by Suzuki Zuigen and
began his life as a painter.

Although the world's attention was focused on Western culture,
he realised that the traditional Japanese "decorative arts" were the right path for him
in the new Meiji era, and at the age of 23 he began studying arts and crafts
under the leading arts and crafts designer of the time, Kishi Koukei.

Sekka was devoted to the decorative art of 'Rimpa' and
was active as a designer and painter.
The designs he worked on included dyeing and weaving,
ceramics, lacquerware, interior decoration and gardens.

Momoyogusa "A World of Things" is a three-volume collection of woodblock prints
created between 1909 and 1910, when he was 43-44 years old.
