Shimomura Gyokukou

Shimomura Gyokukou (1878-1926) was a prominent Japanese designer born in Kyoto, 
spanning the Meiji and Taisho periods. Renowned for his innovative and graceful designs, Shimomura gained significant popularity during the Taisho era. 

His designs, characterized by soft curves depicting animals and demons, exuded a rustic charm that endeared them to the public. A notable figure in the design community, Shimomura established the "Kyoto Design Association," playing a pivotal role in organizing design groups and exerting a considerable influence in the field. 
Among his distinguished works are "Tamahiro Gashu," "Daiten Zuan," and "Shikishima Katachi." Shimomura's legacyincludes a range of boldly deformed motifs based on folktales, specifically in children's yuzen designs, celebrated for their pop aesthetics and timeless appeal. His work continues to be highly regarded for its unique blend of 
traditional Japanese elements with a modern sensibility.
