Ukiyo-e artist of the mid-Edo period.
The founder of nishiki-e.
In 1760, he began to produce nishiki-e prints using multi-coloured woodblock prints, and made a revolutionary contribution to the technique of ukiyo-e.
He loved to depict everyday scenes of Yoshiwara, the pure love between young men and women, and the harmonious love between parents and children. His paintings are also often depicted as "mitate-e", connected with the meaning of classical Japanese poetry.
