Night View of the Eight Views of Kanazawa (Buyō Kanazawa Hasshō Yakei) is a triptych from Utagawa Hiroshige's late series Setsugekka (Snow, Moon, and Flowers), created in 1857, near the end of his career. A full moon rises over Kanazawa Bay, a flock of geese crossing its glowing face, its light catching sailboats on the water as pine-studded points of land and a thatched fishing village stretch across the shore, with layered mountains fading into the night.
Kanazawa — today part of Yokohama — was celebrated since the Edo period for its "Eight Views." Hiroshige compresses all eight into a single moonlit panorama across three sheets, his late mastery of restrained color and atmosphere turning the bay into an image of quiet, poetic calm.
