Mountains and River on the Kiso Road (Kisoji no Sansen) is a triptych from Utagawa Hiroshige's late series Setsugekka (Snow, Moon, and Flowers), created in 1857 — the "Snow" installment, companion to his moonlit view of Kanazawa. Snow-covered peaks of the Kiso range rise across the full width of the composition in smooth, sweeping white curves, their mass set against the deep indigo of the Kiso River at their foot. Snow falls thick and steady from the sky, with pine trees, a small bridge, and scattered huts picked out along the slopes.
Working near the end of his career, Hiroshige compresses the overwhelming scale and hush of the Kiso mountains into the wide format of the triptych. A striking, quiet addition to any interior.
